Field Service
The set of processes covering installation, maintenance, or repair performed at customer locations โ technician assignment, routing, and customer notification.
Field Service ManagementFSM
Field service covers the installation, periodic maintenance, and repair work that a service firm performs by sending technicians to customer locations. In operations research, it sits at the intersection of classical vehicle routing (VRP), the assignment problem, and scheduling: skill matching, time windows, travel time, spare-part inventory, and urgent-job priority all need to be balanced together. HVAC, elevators, appliances, internet infrastructure, agricultural machinery, office equipment (printers/copiers), and medical devices are the most common sectors. The dynamic nature is important: a planned schedule gets re-computed throughout the day as urgent jobs arrive.
รrnek
An elevator maintenance firm with 15 technicians manages 60โ80 daily maintenance appointments plus 5โ10 emergency calls. Each technician is certified on certain brands; each customer wants a specific time window. The field service software optimizes the matching every morning and re-computes when emergencies arrive.
