Microgrid Management

OR and control problem of dispatching a small-scale, multi-source energy system over a rolling time horizon under power-balance, storage and generator constraints.

Microgrid Energy ManagementMEMMicrogrid Operation Optimization
Microgrid Management is the operations-research and control question faced by the operator of a small-scale, multi-source energy system โ€” renewables (PV, wind), storage (battery energy storage system BESS), dispatchable generation (diesel generator, gas turbine) and flexible load โ€” that may run in grid-connected or islanded mode. Over a 24-48 hour rolling horizon at a 5-15 minute time step, the operator decides per period: how much each source produces, how much the battery charges or discharges, whether the generator starts, which flexible loads run, and how much energy is imported from or exported to the main grid. Constraints: instantaneous power balance, battery state-of-charge bounds, generator minimum-up/minimum-down time, battery cycle aging, critical-load continuity in islanded mode. The canonical MILP-MPC formulation is by Parisio, Rikos and Glielmo (2014); the foundational IEEE definition is Hatziargyriou et al. (2007). Objective: minimum total operating cost (fuel + grid import - grid export + battery aging), possibly extended to multi-objective (cost + emissions + reliability).

A 600 kW PV + 250 kWh battery + 150 kW diesel campus microgrid runs an MPC-based EMS that re-optimises every 15 minutes and cuts annual operating cost by 22% while raising PV self-consumption from 55% to 78%.
