Setup Reduction

OR / IE practice of minimising the cumulative setup time (tool change, fixture change, cleaning) across a part's process plan via sequence ordering, multi-operation tools, family setups and SMED internal/external separation.

Setup reduction is the operations-research and industrial-engineering practice of minimising the cumulative setup time (tool change + fixture change + cleaning + adjustment) across a part's process plan via sequence ordering, multi-operation tools (one tool that can work several features in a single setup), family setups (the group-technology link), and the SMED approach (separation of internal setup โ€” done while the machine is stopped โ€” from external setup โ€” done while the machine runs). Setup is typically 15-40% of small-part total processing time; reducing it directly increases throughput and frees capacity. Foundational reference: ElMaraghy (1993). While #001 (Job Shop) addresses sequence-dependent setups, CAPP (#092) groups setups within a single part's process plan.
