Shift scheduling (or personnel rostering) is the problem of assigning employees to time slots and roles over a planning horizon (typically weekly or monthly). The decision: who, when, in which role. Legal limits (weekly hour cap, consecutive days, rest periods), skill requirements, employee preferences, and demand variability must hold simultaneously. The canonical academic instance is the 'Nurse Rostering Problem' (NRP); restaurants, retail, call centers, healthcare, and shift-based manufacturing share the same mathematical skeleton.
