TCO — Total Cost of Ownership
An evaluation approach that reduces all life-cycle costs of an asset — beyond purchase price, including operation, maintenance, energy, training, parts and disposal — to a single comparable figure.

Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is a financial evaluation approach that reduces not only the purchase price of an asset, but every cost it will generate over its entire life cycle, to a single comparable figure. TCO is typically decomposed into four cost blocks: (1) acquisition costs — price, freight, customs, installation, training, initial spare parts; (2) operating costs — energy, consumables, operator labor, financing; (3) maintenance and repair costs — planned maintenance, breakdown repairs, spare-parts inventory, out-of-warranty labor; and (4) disposal costs — dismantling, scrap value, environmental compliance. SMB purchasing officers use TCO especially for capital goods, equipment and energy-consuming machinery, because a low-acquisition-price asset can prove more expensive over its life cycle once energy and maintenance costs are added. TCO feeds naturally into #094 inventory decisions, #022 AHP-based supplier selection and #093 EOQ family models, because the genuine 'unit cost' is the life-cycle cost rather than the acquisition price. The computation is typically performed as the Net Present Value (NPV) of a multi-year cash-flow stream, accounting for the time value of money. Ellram (1995) established the methodological framework for industrial TCO.

Over a 10-year TCO horizon, Machine A totals 4.6M TRY and Machine B totals 3.9M TRY; the SMB selects Machine B — 500K TRY more expensive at purchase but 700K TRY cheaper over its life cycle.
