Transit Network Design

OR problem of choosing which bus (or tram, metro) lines to operate in an urban network, which stops each line serves and what route each line follows, subject to total operating budget, demand-coverage and transfer-quality constraints.

Transit Network Design is the OR decision problem an urban transport operator faces of choosing, from a set of candidate lines, which are operated, which stops each operated line serves and what route each line follows; subject to budget (total fleet + hourly operating cost), every stop covered by at least one line, interchange-hub coverage, and a maximum passenger walk distance. It is the strategic-tactical layer above frequency setting and timetabling. The canonical reference is Ceder and Wilson (1986); the textbook is Ceder (2007); the modern survey is Ibarra-Rojas-Delgado-Giesen-Munoz (2015); the column-generation approach is Borndörfer-Grötschel-Pfetsch (2007). Solution methods: set-covering-like MIP (per-stop coverage constraints), two-stage (lines first, frequency next) or combined MIP / column generation. Objectives: minimum passenger travel time, minimum operating cost, maximum modal share for transit.
Örnek

A 1.5M-population metropolitan operator runs 120 bus lines plus 250 candidate new routes; the transit-network-design MIP revises 40 lines and proposes 8 new ones, cutting average passenger travel time by 15% while holding operating cost flat.
